EIA – Perimeter Road

PROJECT OWNER: Edmonton International Airport
PROJECT LOCATION: Perimeter Road: Airport Road to 56 Avenue
PROJECT SCHEDULE: April 2, 2018 to August 31, 2019
PROJECT VALUE: $2,350,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project entailed the upgrade of a 1.4km section of existing gravel road to a four lane arterial in order to establish access to the new Century Mile Casino and Premium Outlet Collection Mall. The scope of work included the placement of 2500 lineal meters of curb and gutter and 5400 square meters of median infill, for a total of approximately 1000 cubic meters of concrete. It also included paving 10,500 tonnes of 20mm-B and 4000 tonnes of 10mm-HT, for a total of 14,500 tonnes of ACP.

The work was tendered to be completed in two phases. Phase I (2018) included the installation of the two northbound lanes, while Phase II (2019) was to complete the two southbound lanes and the majority of the concrete work on the center median. Carmacks crews quickly exceeded the schedule requirements for Phase I and with the subgrade work already in place for Phase 2 portion it was decided to expedite the work on the southbound lanes for Phase II. Working in conjunction with Pidherney’s crews we were able to finish the entire project in year one with the exception of a 50mm asphalt overlay to be completed in the spring of 2019.

One of the major challenges on this project was the coordination of work with the ongoing construction of the Century Mile Casino/Race Track. Their only access onto their site was directly off of Perimeter Road, resulting in a constant flow of construction traffic to and from site as they brought in all of their required materials/equipment. This complicated the phasing/scheduling of the work, but with the cooperation of all involved and open lines of communication we were able to accommodate both sides and work through any obstacles that came up.
