HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE

The Highway Maintenance Division currently provides maintenance services to Alberta Transportation on three vital urban freeways; the Deerfoot Trail and North Stoney Trail in Calgary as well as the Northwest Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton.

The Deerfoot Trail contract involves maintenance of over 400 lane-km of highway consisting of 4 and 8 lane freeways, handling up to 180,000 vehicles per day.

In November of 2009 Carmacks was awarded the 30 year O&M contract for maintenance on the Northeast and Northwest sections of the Stoney Trail, consisting of 474 lane-km of 4 to 6 lane freeway, handling up to 50,000 vehicles per day.

The 30 year contract to maintain the NW Anthony Henday in Edmonton commenced November 1, 2011.  This section of the Anthony Henday Ring Road includes 231 lane kms of 4 and 6 lane urban high speed freeway, eight interchanges, five flyovers and two rail crossings for a total of 27 bridge structures.  Current traffic volume is approximately 35,000 vehicles per day.

Crews dedicated to maintaining these roadways work out of shops located in NE Calgary and NW Edmonton. Operations, based on 24/7/365 manpower coverage, include snow and ice control, (plowing, sanding and salting) summer grass, drainage and weed control, surface repairs, bridge maintenance, overhead lighting and traffic signals, line painting and maintenance of signs, guardrails and traffic accommodation at accident sites.
