HIGHWAY 884 STRIP & SUBDECK REPLACEMENT

PROJECT OWNER: Alberta Transportation
PROJECT LOCATION: Jenner, Alberta
PROJECT SCHEDULE: July – September 2018
PROJECT VALUE: $702,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

BF 9179 consists of three Through Truss spans (61m – 76.2m – 61m) constructed on timber and concrete substructures over the Red Deer River on Hwy 884. The majority of the work on this project involved replacement of the stripdeck and subdeck. Other work included partial depth repairs, steel truss repairs, new paved approach tie-ins, and replacement of select timber caps.

Protection of the cliff swallows nesting on top of the piers was a unique challenge during this project. Construction was undertaken in such a manner as to not disturb the birds until the nesting window was over and they left their nests.

Traffic had to be accommodated during this project across the bridge as there is no detour bridge nearby. Traffic stoppages were limited to 15 minutes per occurrence which affected the subdeck work as the boards spanned the width of the bridge.

Construction was completed by September 2018 on schedule and within budget.
