MANNING DRIVE/18 ST NW INTERSECTION & HORSEHILLS CREEK BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

PROJECT OWNER: City Of Edmonton
PROJECT LOCATION: Manning Drive (Hwy 15) & 18th Street (3.1 km NE of Anthony Henday Drive)
PROJECT SCHEDULE: July 2017 to June 2019
PROJECT VALUE: $5,500,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The scope of work for this project was to improve the intersection at Manning Drive and 18th Street. The project involved the widening of the existing highway to construct new turning lanes, the installation of concrete islands, new traffic signals and street lighting, complete overlay paving of 700 meters and new pavement markings. The reconstruction of 195th Avenue included the removal and replacement of the existing Horsehills Creek Bridge.

Several challenges presented as a result of the multiple scopes of work within the contract. As Manning Drive is a major roadway seeing in excess of 25,000 AADT, planning of activities was a crucial aspect of the construction to ensure the safety workers on site and traffic travelling through the zone. Second, as a major route through to the Industrial Heartland, it was important to keep traffic disruptions to a minimum which restricted roadwork to off peak and night time hours.

The Horsehills Creek Bridge replacement was over an active watercourse and wetlands; protection of the environment was at the forefront. A site specific ECO Plan was developed along with monitoring of nesting birds, installation of floating silt curtains and cofferdams to minimize water turbidity.

Despite all of the challenges presented and with co-operation of the owner, consultant and contractor we were successful in meeting all deadlines 2017 with the final overlay paving scheduled for the spring of 2018.
